trimming candle wick

Wick Trimming

Trimming a candle wick with a wick trimmer is a simple process that helps improve the performance of your candle, preventing soot and ensuring a clean burn. Here’s how to do it:

Steps to Trim a Candle Wick with a Wick Trimmer

number 1 icon

Ensure the Candle is Cool

Wait until the candle has cooled completely before trimming the wick. This prevents the wax from splashing or causing accidents while trimming.

Position the Wick Trimmer

Hold the wick trimmer in your hand, making sure the trimmer’s blades are open and ready to cut. The trimmer should be positioned directly above the wick, so the blades can easily access the top of the wick.

Trim the Wick

Place the wick trimmer around the wick, aligning the blades to the desired wick height. Typically, a wick should be trimmed to about 1/4 inch (or about 6mm) above the wax surface. This ensures a clean burn and prevents excessive flickering.

Snip the Wick

Close the trimmer's handles to cut the wick. The trimmer’s design often catches the trimmed wick, so it won’t fall into the wax.

Dispose of the Wick

After trimming, remove the small piece of wick and discard it safely.

Light the Candle

Once trimmed, you can relight the candle and enjoy a cleaner burn.

  • Trim Regularly

For the best candle experience, trim the wick every time you burn the candle. This prevents the wick from getting too long and ensures a steady flame.

  • By regularly trimming your candle wicks, you help your candles burn more efficiently, last longer, and stay soot-free!

snuffing candle wick

Wick Snuffing

Snuffing out a candle wick with a wick snuffer is a great way to extinguish a candle safely while avoiding any splattering of hot wax or unpleasant smoke. Here’s how you can do it:

Steps to Snuff Out a Candle Wick with a Wick Snuffer

number 1 icon

Position the Snuffer Over the Flame

Hold the wick snuffer in your hand, ensuring that the bell-shaped end is facing the candle wick. Carefully position the bell-shaped part of the snuffer over the flame of the candle.

Snuff Out the Flame

Once the snuffer is directly above the flame, lower it gently until the flame is fully enclosed but above the molten wax. Hold it there for 5 seconds. The flame should now be extinguished. The snuffer works by cutting off the supply of oxygen to the flame, effectively putting it out without creating smoke.

number 3 icon

Remove the Snuffer

After the flame has been extinguished, carefully lift the snuffer off the candle. Make sure the flame is now out and there are no lingering sparks.

number 4 icon

Clean the Snuffer

Before putting the snuffer away, check that the bell-shaped end is clean. If it touches the molten wax, wipe it off thoroughly.

  • Avoid Blowing on the Wick

Blowing out the flame can cause hot wax to splatter, leading to a mess or even burns. It can also blow the wick into the molten wax. Using a snuffer is a safer and cleaner alternative.

  • Snuffing out your candle wick with a snuffer helps maintain the wick's condition, reduce smoke, and keeps your candle burning longer and cleaner!
